Will BlackBerry ID Be The Death of BlackBerry OS and App Leaks?

BlackBerry ID Signup

Over the last few weeks we have seen a bit of RIMs vision on how they plan on integrating BlackBerry ID closer into the BlackBerry OS. This had me thinking over the weekend what this could possibly mean for leaked BlackBerry OS betas and the apps that are extracted from them. Currently RIM could really track down who is using leaked OS versions through PIN numbers or BIS but they choose not to. Once RIM integrates the sort of “single sign on” provided by BlackBerry ID will they be more proactive?

Think about it for a second. For example, in the beta zone RIM could simply integrate BlackBerry ID and authorize certain apps based on your ID. They could also do the same thing with BlackBerry OS beta builds simply authorizing them only on certain logins. Don’t get me wrong I am sure Hybrid builders could find a way around “Frankenstein-ing” an OS update out of its parts but its an interesting concept. I have always said it is ridiculous that RIM almost 10 logins/profiles for different systems for customers ranging from BBM, Forums, BIS, Developers, App World Vendors, etc and they need to consolidate them. The question is what will they do with the consolidation.

What do you think? Will BlackBerry ID mark the downfall of leaked OS builds and apps?

Calibre – Easily Manage & Convert eBooks for your BlackBerry for Free

calibre_main calibre_convert

One of the things I truly love to do on my BlackBerry is read books. The thing is RIM does not offer a proper way to do this out of the box and developers have been keeping us a bit wanting for solutions. In the past I have told you about my favorite MobiPocket Reader which has truly gone downhill since Amazon acquired them and released the Kindle. Now that OverDrive has released a free ePub eBook reader for BlackBerry I am back in the game!

One of the main questions people had about OverDrive is: How do I convert eBooks, documents, and even news to a format I can read in OverDrive or even MobiPocket on my BlackBerry? There is a simple answer to that question and it is called Calibre. It is a free opensource application for Windows, Mac, and Linux that helps you manage and convert eBooks for your BlackBerry and many other devices.

calibre_viewer calibre_main2

Calibre performs four essential functions for me thought there are many other uses for it:

Manages your eBook library on your computer kind of like a music management systemConverts eBooks between the following formats:Input Formats: CBZ, CBR, CBC, CHM, EPUB, FB2, HTML, LIT, LRF, MOBI, ODT, PDF, PRC**, PDB, PML, RB, RTF, SNB, TCR, TXTOutput Formats: EPUB, FB2, OEB, LIT, LRF, MOBI, PDB, PML, RB, PDF, SNB, TCR, TXTEasily export or sync a set of books to my BlackBerry over USBDownloads news from both websites and RSS feeds and can turn them into eBooks. I have some long form sites that are not time sensitive that I use this for.

If you like reading eBooks on your BlackBerry or want to get more into it I highly recommend checking out Calibre at this link. Let me know if you find any other good BlackBerry eBook reading tools or resources!

Sometimes Mobile Advertisements Assume too Much…

UberTwitter Advertisement Fail

Mobile ads are coming into more and more BlackBerry apps. Its sort of a double edged sword but it gets us more free quality apps. On the other hand it sometimes makes you wonder why the app decides to show you that specific ad. I know I see many dating ads on Facebook or even BerryReview when the article discusses dating but at what point does it become too intrusive?

I am not specifically pointing out this ad but unlike website ads the advertisements in mobile apps tend to be more in your face. Let us know what you think of ad supported apps in the comments.

Dude, Where Are My BlackBerry PlayBook Ads? Speculate!

BlackBerry PlayBook Preorder

I am really starting to get a bit worried here. The BlackBerry PlayBook launches in seven days on April 19th and I have yet to see a single BlackBerry PlayBook ad. This has me wondering what RIM’s playbook is for the PlayBook launch. I have spoken to a few friends about it and I have to say it is very odd that RIM has been so hush about what is truly a HUGE announcement for them. Bishop5 pointed out in the comments that we should put up a post asking all of you to speculate on what reason RIM could have for such a quiet build up to the BlackBerry PlayBook launch. Don’t they want potential customers to know when it launches or even what a BlackBerry PlayBook is?

Here are some of my ideas sorted in no particular order:

RIM plans on soft launching the BlackBerry PlayBook and starting the ad blitz on launch day (doesn’t make much sense)RIM has a ton of companies lined up to buy millions of PlayBooks at launch to beat analyst expectationsThere will be a shortage of BlackBerry PlayBooks at launch and RIM wants them in the hands of the BlackBerry faithfulThe media campaign for the PlayBook started back in October and was really drawn out and RIM does not want to draw out the ad campaignRIM cannot make up its mind on if the PlayBook is meant for the enterprise or consumersRIM is crazy…

Feel free to share your thoughts in the comments!

Exchange My Mail Offers BES Express Hosting – Works With BIS Plans

Exchange My Mail BES Express Hosting

I was waiting for Microsoft Exchange BES hosting companies to jump on BES Express. Until now most Microsoft Exchange hosting companies have been using BES Premium which requires that users have what is usually a more expensive BES data plan from your carrier. With BES Express these hosting companies can let you use a regular (usually cheaper) BIS plan with all the same features. For example, on AT&T that means the difference between $25-$30 a month for a BIS plan or $40-$45 a month for a BES plan.

Exchange My Mail is offering their BES Express hosting service for the same $9.99 as their regular BES hosting. That means you would still be paying Exchange My Mail the same monthly fee for each mailbox but you could downgrade your data plan. The only real difference is you would need to download a BES Express activation app to activate a BES Express device instead of using the regular activation app built into the BlackBerry. You can still do tethered activations though from both plans.

Check out Exchange My Mail’s BES Express hosting option at this link and let us know if you switch over!

Last Day for Developers to Submit Apps for Free PlayBook Offer – Have You?

Develop_PlayBook_banner1

What I am hearing now is that RIM may have screwed up in the email they sent to developers that made us think the free PlayBook offer was extended. With that extension not happening that makes today the last official day to submit a BlackBerry PlayBook app to be eligible for the offer of a free BlackBerry PlayBook at launch. If you are not already in the submission process with an App World vendor account and signing keys I doubt you can still make the deadline. I am curious how many of you have already submitted apps or plan on submitting them today. Let me know in the comments along with what kind of app you submitted.

In the same vein I submitted a WebWorks app I created on March 23rd and it still is “pending review” over a week later. Maybe RIM is getting inundated with submissions? Either way they better approve it or I will have a conniption. :)

BlackBerry OS 7 “Highlander” to Meld OS 6.1 and QNX Together

There can be only one Highlander BlackBerry OS

We have been hearing so much conflicting information on the upcoming BlackBerry OS 6.1 and OS 7 making it hard to break fact from fiction. We just heard from one of our sources who passed along the gist of CTO of software, David Yach, keynote at RIM’s internal RDX dev conference today. Here are some highlights from his keynote though he kind of jumped around a bit:

A big portion of the talk is focusing on the benefit RIM will get from centralizing processes and tools. (what RIM’s COO of product engineering, Thorsten Heins, said yesterday)One of the key reasons OS 6.1 is falling behind schedule is miscommunication between teams in the critical path of the projectHe didn’t focus on the problems as much as how RIM is going to solve them by easing conflicts in the critical path

The second part of the keynote is where things got interesting talking about OS 7 and OS 6.1:

There is a new project “Highlander” using the concept from the movies “There can be only one”This project is taking the best features from OS 6.1 and the QNX OS to make OS 7. This seems to be where the rumors about OS 6.1 having a QNX core are coming fromRIM is “very happy” with OS 6.1 but it struggling with losing the features users loveOS 6.1 is almost 10 years old and has pushed its limitsStill they are very happy about the “Liquid Graphics” in OS 6.1 adding a WOW factor to BlackBerrysThis new OS 7 will also be the OS for the Playbook down the road. Seeing the theme of  "there can be only one" ?RIM is still in the “early stages” of OS 7 with a target of 2012

I am really loving the Highlander references and think RIM should actually give their OS builds a name. For example, OS 6.0 could be Phoenix… :) So what do you think of the info passed along? It is second hand so its hard to analyze properly but still I am really excited to see RIM has a plan for 2011 and 2012. Here is to hoping they execute it correctly!

BlackBerry PlayBook Internet Tethering Simply Uses Bluetooth Dial Up Networking

BlackBerry PlayBook Internet Tethering

Over the last few weeks I have tried to explain to a few people the difference between the BlackBerry Bridge and the Internet Tethering  on the BlackBerry PlayBook. The BlackBerry Bridge simply proxies certain information like email, contacts, calendar, notes, tasks, and BBM from a BlackBerry to the PlayBook and shows that information on the PlayBook. It looks like it may give BES users access to the companies intranet but that is about it.

Internet Tethering on the other hand is simply using the Bluetooth Dial Up Networking (DUN) profile that many phones support. This was just confirmed again in a leaked guide by http://crackberry.com/internet-tethering-blackberry-playbook-tablet-bluetooth. That means any phone that supports Dial Up Networking over Bluetooth, which many feature phones even support, will be able to use their phone to get to the internet from a PlayBook.

This all comes with one major caveat. Carriers are going to want to get paid. That means I can see them tacking on some $20 or so charge a month for “PlayBook Tethering.” What would be really cool is if these plans would work with the upcoming Mobile Wi-Fi Hotspot features coming in the next generation of BlackBerrys.

Check out the details from the guide at this link. I have spoken to a few devs and it does not look like they will be able to create an app like “Tether” with the current SDK’s available for the PlayBook. On the other hand my discussions with a few internal RIM devs hint that quite a few more API’s are coming soon.

BlackBerry 6.1 Will We See a More Evolved UI? Maybe Some TAT Influence?

blackberryroadmap201115RIM promised in the recent quarterly  investors call that the next upgrade to the BlackBerry OS  will be 6.1 due in May. They also promised that it wouldn’t be an incremental upgrade but according to edngadget it will be a Major upgrade.  This could be interpreted in many different ways including that we may see a preview of what is to come with QNX. Some analyst have hinted at the the fact that RIM may create a hybrid OS from the current OS and QNX. I think that is not likely that we will see some QNX flavored OS this early, my guess would be if there are some UI changes those may come from the help from TAT.

RIM made it clear that it will be a huge upgrade, we have seen some leaked slides pertaining to new features for the OS home screen interface like the option to set favorites, and frequent apps. There are quite a few other features that will be added to this update but the main concern for most people is the user interface of the OS. People tend to react to the cosmetics part of the OS. Many who compare the visually part of IOS to BlackBerry only see the interface and that’s why they believe the OS is better than BlackBerry when in reality the BlackBerry OS leaves IOS and other in the dust when it comes to capabilities but it usually is compare to the appealing visual side and how easy it is to use.

Hopefully with 6.1 RIM has been able to find a happy medium with the UI and also the ease of use. I would love for RIM to prove me wrong and have 6.1 with QNX by this summer but I find that highly unlikely.

What are your thoughts?

Polar Mobile Signs Deal with RIM for Over 100 PlayBook Apps

In case you don’t know Polar Mobile they are a solid mobile development shop that creates some of the popular content apps you probably already use. RIM Extending Free Developer PlayBook Offer Until April 19th?

Develop_PlayBook_banner1

It looks like RIM is extending their free BlackBerry PlayBook for developers offer yet again. I think this is a great move by RIM though I have not seen the change reflected on the RIM website yet. Long time reader Marc received an email today stating:

The BlackBerry developer community has already begun developing and submitting applications for the BlackBerry® PlayBook™. Registered developers who submit a qualifying BlackBerry® PlayBook™ app that is accepted into BlackBerry App World™ prior to the initial product launch in North America (April 19th) will receive a free BlackBerry® PlayBook™. Learn how to qualify for the free BlackBerry® PlayBook™ tablet offer.

I am not sure if RIM changed their qualifications for the offer anymore but I expect we will hear from them soon. I think this is a brilliant move on RIM’s part because it will net them many more than the 100 or so Android 3.0 HoneyComb tablet apps available now.

Keep an eye out on BerryReview for updates!

Free BlackBerry Travel App Updated Again to v1.0.350.99

192133192135 192137

I know that RIM is licensing their BlackBerry Travel app using WorldMate’s tech but even so RIM rarely releases updates this close to each other. That is unless there is some critical bug that needed squashing. Nikolaus let us know that RIM has updated BlackBerry Travel to v1.0.350.99 which is only slightly newer than the v1.0.341.99 released on the 23rd. In typical RIM fashion there is no changelog to help us decide if the 3MB download is worth it, but we sort of found an update in BetaZone change log that seems kind of helpful:

Added Bold 9000 support.
Fixed issue of disappearing itineraries.
Resolved device freezing (white screen) on launch of application.
Fixed settings reset after battery pull:
Caused TripCatch to turn off.
Caused users to lose their home city until next sync.
Updated the splat mechanism to fix various bugs.
Added Hotel promotions in hotels results screen.
General push framework fixes.
Fixed airport selection on new flight.
New UI control in weather card.
UI fixes for LinkedIn screen.
Various small UI changes and fixes ? All screens.
Improved swipe behavior for home screen cards.
Added ?All cities? option:
Will show multiple weather displays (one per each city).
Will show all LinkedIn connections per trip.
Yelp links will go to Yelp search screen (instead of results), with the selected category pre-populated as well as the first city.
Added sort menu items in Yelp screen.
Added empty images to LinkedIn field like in LinkedIn card.
Added state to airport name in auto complete field.
Currency screen: Corrected concurrency issues and added ‘Update Rates’ option in menu.
Implemented key press: ‘T’ & ‘B’ scrolls to Top and Bottom accordingly.
Added timer for ensuring GPS deactivation.
Fixed XML encoding in BlackBerry Maps.
Fixed calendar sync.

Check out the latest version of BlackBerry Travel in App World at this link.

PS: I am sure we will make Mike Lazaridis cry by the possibly wasted 3MB upgrade data usage.
