Dude, Where Are My BlackBerry PlayBook Ads? Speculate!

I am really starting to get a bit worried here. The BlackBerry PlayBook launches in seven days on April 19th and I have yet to see a single BlackBerry PlayBook ad. This has me wondering what RIM’s playbook is for the PlayBook launch. I have spoken to a few friends about it and I have to say it is very odd that RIM has been so hush about what is truly a HUGE announcement for them. Bishop5 pointed out in the comments that we should put up a post asking all of you to speculate on what reason RIM could have for such a quiet build up to the BlackBerry PlayBook launch. Don’t they want potential customers to know when it launches or even what a BlackBerry PlayBook is?

Here are some of my ideas sorted in no particular order:

RIM plans on soft launching the BlackBerry PlayBook and starting the ad blitz on launch day (doesn’t make much sense)RIM has a ton of companies lined up to buy millions of PlayBooks at launch to beat analyst expectationsThere will be a shortage of BlackBerry PlayBooks at launch and RIM wants them in the hands of the BlackBerry faithfulThe media campaign for the PlayBook started back in October and was really drawn out and RIM does not want to draw out the ad campaignRIM cannot make up its mind on if the PlayBook is meant for the enterprise or consumersRIM is crazy…

Last Day for Developers to Submit Apps for Free PlayBook Offer – Have You?

What I am hearing now is that RIM may have screwed up in the email they sent to developers that made us think the free PlayBook offer was extended. With that extension not happening that makes today the last official day to submit a BlackBerry PlayBook app to be eligible for the offer of a free BlackBerry PlayBook at launch. If you are not already in the submission process with an App World vendor account and signing keys I doubt you can still make the deadline. I am curious how many of you have already submitted apps or plan on submitting them today. Let me know in the comments along with what kind of app you submitted.

In the same vein I submitted a WebWorks app I created on March 23rd and it still is “pending review” over a week later. Maybe RIM is getting inundated with submissions? Either way they better approve it or I will have a conniption.

XIMAD Starts Rolling Out PlayBook Apps

At one time or another on our BlackBerry’s we have all probably used a XiMad app.  And they were kind enough to let us know that they have started releasing PlayBook apps via their AppWorld Portfolio.  They have even ported over 25 of their games and apps from Android to work on the PlayBook also.

Some of XiMad’s featured releases are Droplets, and Blonde Jokes HD.  They have also started creating animated eBooks for the PlayBook under the trademark “Books Alive”.  Some things we will for sure be checking out on April 19th!

BlackBerry PlayBook Internet Tethering Simply Uses Bluetooth Dial Up Networking

Over the last few weeks I have tried to explain to a few people the difference between the BlackBerry Bridge and the Internet Tethering  on the BlackBerry PlayBook. The BlackBerry Bridge simply proxies certain information like email, contacts, calendar, notes, tasks, and BBM from a BlackBerry to the PlayBook and shows that information on the PlayBook. It looks like it may give BES users access to the companies intranet but that is about it.

Internet Tethering on the other hand is simply using the Bluetooth Dial Up Networking (DUN) profile that many phones support. This was just confirmed again in a leaked guide by http://crackberry.com/internet-tethering-blackberry-playbook-tablet-bluetooth. That means any phone that supports Dial Up Networking over Bluetooth, which many feature phones even support, will be able to use their phone to get to the internet from a PlayBook.

This all comes with one major caveat. Carriers are going to want to get paid. That means I can see them tacking on some $20 or so charge a month for “PlayBook Tethering.” What would be really cool is if these plans would work with the upcoming Mobile Wi-Fi Hotspot features coming in the next generation of BlackBerrys.

I have spoken to a few devs and it does not look like they will be able to create an app like “Tether” with the current SDK’s available for the PlayBook. On the other hand my discussions with a few internal RIM devs hint that quite a few more API’s are coming soon.

Polar Mobile Signs Deal with RIM for Over 100 PlayBook Apps

In case you don’t know Polar Mobile they are a solid mobile development shop that creates some of the popular content apps you probably already use. Polar Mobile let us know they have inked a deal to bring at least 100 apps to the BlackBerry PlayBook. These apps are probably going to be for the same clients that Polar Mobile is currently working with from their catalog of 200+ BlackBerry apps.
I am not sure what RIM had to do with the deal but I have heard of them doing similar things in the past. I know RIM has played a role in getting many apps to the BlackBerry Platform by contracting with the developing house directly. Its a pretty solid move for RIM and I hear they are looking to create similar deals. Just to give you an idea of the apps this deal will bring to the PlayBook some of Polar Moblie’s apps include: TheStreet, Bloomberg, The Hockey News, TIME. CNN Money, and many more.

RIM Extending Free Developer PlayBook Offer Until April 19th?

It looks like RIM is extending their free BlackBerry PlayBook for developers offer yet again. I think this is a great move by RIM though I have not seen the change reflected on the RIM website yet. Long time reader Marc received an email today stating:

The BlackBerry developer community has already begun developing and submitting applications for the BlackBerry® PlayBook™. Registered developers who submit a qualifying BlackBerry® PlayBook™ app that is accepted into BlackBerry App World™ prior to the initial product launch in North America (April 19th) will receive a free BlackBerry® PlayBook™. Learn how to qualify for the free BlackBerry® PlayBook™ tablet offer.

I am not sure if RIM changed their qualifications for the offer anymore but I expect we will hear from them soon. I think this is a brilliant move on RIM’s part because it will net them many more than the 100 or so Android 3.0 HoneyComb tablet apps available now.

AGF Ballistic Built For BlackBerry PlayBook Case

Recently I reviewed the GRT Shell case for the BlackBerry 9800  from AGF  and yesterday they let us know that they have cases for the 8500 and 9300 curves. The one thing that interested me the most though was the mention of the Ballistic Tough Jacket (TJ) for the soon to be released PlayBook. We know that RIM is releasing some cases and other accessories for the PlayBook but is is nice to see other 3rd party vendors working on them too.  This means that early adopters of the PlayBook won’t have much problems finding accessories for it. Where is the BlackBerry PlayBook Advertisement Blitz?

Now that RIM has officially set the BlackBerry PlayBook launch date for April 19th along with opening up preorders I keep wondering one thing. Where are all the BlackBerry PlayBook ads. RIM has really stepped up their game with BlackBerry smartphone ads but I have yet to see one ad for the BlackBerry PlayBook. No billboards, web ads, nothing…

So I have to wonder if we are in the quiet before the storm? Will we suddenly see the floodgates open in the next three weeks? What do you think RIM’s game plan is?

Office Depot and Sears Canada Also Offering PlayBook Preorders

Retailers are gearing up for the April 19th launch of the BlackBerry PlayBook. I got an email yesterday from Sears Canada announcing that they have opened the doors for preorders for all three variants of the BlackBerry PlayBook. Quite a few readers also let us know that Office Depot in the US is also accepting preorders. The prices are the same across all these retailers but the trend I am seeing is that many of them are only really going to have quantities of the 16GB variant in stock at stores.

RIM BlackBerry PlayBook Java SDK and C/C++ NDK Coming Along with Gaming Engines!

Today is a big day for BlackBerry PlayBook developers. First we heard about the PlayBook supporting Android apps. Also in that same press release was mention of a Java “player” that will allow the BlackBerry PlayBook to run “BlackBerry Apps.” I am not sure if RIM means that it will be able to run BlackBerry Smartphone apps but that is what it sounds like. The only catch is the Java player is only coming in the “summer.” Still RIM is saying the:

BlackBerry PlayBook becomes a new market opportunity for all the developers who have already created over 25,000 BlackBerry Java apps and more than 200,000 Android apps 

RIM also confirmed that a BlackBerry Tablet OS Native Development Kit (NDK) is coming in beta form this summer. It is currently in alpha testing and that is how EA made Need for Speed for the PlayBook. RIM is also working on gaming and application SDK’s for the PlayBook together with Ideaworks Labs Airplay and Unity Technologies to bring their engines to the PlayBook soon!

BlackBerry Tablet OS Development Tools

The BlackBerry Tablet OS already supports an incredibly robust platform with support for Web development standard HTML5, through the BlackBerry® WebWorks™ SDK for Tablet OS, and Adobe® AIR®, through the BlackBerry Tablet OS SDK for Adobe AIR. The BlackBerry Tablet OS is built from the ground up to run WebKit and Adobe® Flash® as well, giving developers a fast and true Web experience to leverage.

RIM is also announcing today that the BlackBerry Tablet OS Native Development Kit (NDK), which is currently in limited alpha release, will go into open Beta by this summer and be demonstrated at BlackBerry World. The BlackBerry Tablet OS NDK will allow developers to build high-performance, multi-threaded, native C/C++ applications with industry standard GNU toolchains. Developers can create advanced 2D and 3D applications and special effects by leveraging programmable shaders available in hardware-accelerated OpenGL ES 2.0.

Gaming Engines

Developers will be able to take advantage of these engines when building games and other applications for the BlackBerry PlayBook. 

The Ideaworks Labs Airplay SDK is expected to include support for the BlackBerry Tablet OS soon, making it easy for publishers and developers to use their existing code to bring their games and apps to the BlackBerry PlayBook.

The new app players for the BlackBerry PlayBook are expected to be available from BlackBerry App World this summer. RIM Answers Many BlackBerry PlayBook Developer Questions

Just a few years ago you needed to have some internal hookup at RIM, join the BlackBerry Alliance, sign a million NDAs, and have a recommendation from the Pope to be able to get an answer from the RIM development team. Now the revamped dev team is simply answering questions on Twitter via #AskBBDev. I love it!

RIM provided some solid (and flakey) answers to questions BlackBerry PlayBook developers and users have been asking. I thought I would share the questions and answers with you in case you (probably) missed them.

Here is a quick summary:

RIM is working on improving the draconian App World approval processThe native C/C++ SDK is targeted for a summer beta release and will be shown off at BlackBerry World. This means hot games like Need for Speed and Tetris will only be coming from 3rd party developers after this releaseThe Gyroscope APIs will only be available via the Native SDK initially which is coming later so apps using it will not be available at launchThere will be a final Gold version of the AIR and WebWorks tools before launchRIM is considering USB host support which would allow you to plug in peripherals using the USB port like a memory card reader!

Here are my favorite questions and answers:

Q: andrewcowart – Android devs can submit apps + updates and get approved instantly. Does BB have any plans to speed up the appworld process?

A: We are actively working on improvements to speed up the approval process for App World for new and existing apps.^MK

Q: mobilecreators When the C/C++ SDK will be available? And if you cannot say that, is RIM starting giving the devs some schedule?

Q: jpinkerton Will there be a final 1.0.0 release of the PlayBook SDK prior to launch?

Yes.  We will have a “gold” version of the AIR and Web Works tools before launch for developers. ^MK

Q: scunliffe Is there an estimated timeline for APIs for 1.) Geolocation, 2.) Camera/Video, 3.) Gyroscope events etc.

A: Gyro APIs will only be available via the Native SDK initially but we are investigating exposing to AIR and WebWorks.^MK

Q: scunliffe – Any chance that the Playbook keyboard will have(or option for) a “proper” QWERTY offset key layout? e.g. http://bit.ly/glPHwS

A: Developers cannot write their own keyboard today but we can investigate. Submit to the Issue Tracker.^MK

Q: yousifabdullah Any word on USB host support for advanced peripherals such as audio/MIDI interfaces?

A1: USB Host support will not be available at launch.  We are investigating adding this in a future release. ^MKA2: For HDMI output the “mirror” mode shows the device screen automatically or you can control output for your app.^MK

RIM Explains BlackBerry PlayBook Bridge Setup Designed for BES Customers

RIM is walking a fine line with the BlackBerry PlayBook. Its like they cannot decide if it is a consumer or enterprise device. This just got a bit more interesting when I was reading @BonnieCNET tweets covering a Q&A panel with RIM @ CTIA. WSJ’s Walt Mossberg asked why RIM is launching a tablet that needs a BlackBerry to get your email and calendar. RIM’s response is the most interesting part.

According to Bonnie RIM said that the BlackBerry PlayBook will be getting a native email client in the “coming months” but it was originally designed with BES customers in mind. I can understand that BES customers are important to RIM but just look how they have been showing off the PlayBook. Front and center is gaming, web browsing, video, and other consumer focused features. On the other hand the only enterprise ready part of the tablet is the BlackBerry Bridge which in and of itself I hear only has one IT policy at launch (Bridge on/off).

So the thing I have to ask RIM. How hard would it be for you to write an email, calendar, etc client? I don’t think this is a deal breaker since I simply plan on using the Gmail website in the browser but still. Now that RIM has realized they are targeting the consumer market I am hoping we will see a PIM client very soon. I am not against the concept of the Bridge but why give the haters such an easy target?

Staples Already Setting Up BlackBerry PlayBook Stands in Stores?

Staples seems to be stealing quite a bit of Best Buys glory with the BlackBerry PlayBook launch. RIM actually put out a press release about Best Buy accepting preorders as a “Preferred Retailer for the BlackBerry PlayBook” and then Staples went out and offered preorders sans press release. At first I heard it might be a mistake on Staples part but then…

I was just sent the above picture by a good friend. He took it at a NYC Staples location that is already setting up for the BlackBerry PlayBook launch. They have put up this booth and for what its worth one of the employees in the store said it was coming next week… Employees are notoriously clueless but why are they setting up booths over 3 weeks in advance? Ill let you speculate in the comments…

RIM: BlackBerry PlayBook Will Support Android 2.3 Apps!

I am still floored by this. RIM has just sent us an email confirming that the BlackBerry PlayBook will run Android 2.3 apps. This is a pretty crazy move and will allow developers to easily port their Android apps to BlackBerry. This is a serious double edged sword for RIM and really has me wondering if RIM has some deal with Google on the side. So far all we know is there will be a downloadable player making this all possible…

According to RIM:

Developers currently building for the BlackBerry or Android platforms will be able to quickly and easily port their apps to run on the BlackBerry Tablet OS thanks to a high degree of API compatibility.  The new optional app players will be available for download from BlackBerry App World and will be placed in a secure “sandbox” on the BlackBerry PlayBook where the BlackBerry Java or Android apps can be run.

Developers will simply repackage, code sign and submit their BlackBerry Java and Android apps to BlackBerry App World. Once approved, the apps will be distributed through BlackBerry App World, providing a new opportunity for many developers to reach BlackBerry PlayBook users.  Users will be able to download both the app players and the BlackBerry Java and Android apps from BlackBerry App World.

The BlackBerry PlayBook and BlackBerry Tablet OS are built on the QNX® Neutrino® microkernel architecture with a 1GHz dual core processor and a leading OpenGL solution, which allows RIM to make this incredibly broad platform support possible.
